A Climate Denier in The White House Should Terrify Everyone

“Don the Con”

People are rightfully terrified

Now that we’ve all had some time to digest the election results, lets try and calm down and sort through this heap of burning garbage a bit.  On social media we are all hit with a smattering of pro-Trump celebrations and anti-Trump messages of fear and despair.  America has never been so polarized in modern times, so this is uncharted waters.

When Obama first took office, conservatives took to the streets to protest our new leader just as democrats are taking to the streets now.  This scenario is far different than the Obama protests.  So very different.  When conservatives came together to protest Obama, they did so because they opposed his policy, and they feared that their white privilege might be in jeopardy.  The uprising in the streets since Trump became president-elect is not over a disagreement in policy.  He has no clear policy.  He has often taken two different stances on a policy within the same sentence.

People are genuinely afraid for the safety and rights of all non-white males in America.  It has now become normalized and acceptable to assault women, denegrate minorities, and mock people with disabilities.  When hate groups like the KKK plan to have a celebratory march for a candidate, that should be the last red flag you should  need.  If you picked Trump, you should have some serious buyer’s remorse.

Not all Trump supporters are racist, but all racists are Trump supporters

Not all Trump supporters are racist, but all racists are Trump supporters

Yes, the bigotry and sexism is terrible and unforgivable for any American, let alone our leader.  All decent people can probably agree on that.  With those issues, there is still hope that in 4 years a qualified and intelligent person may take over and work to undo the damage Trump will surly have caused.  There will be such huge pushback and unrest from so many of Trump’s policies, most may never happen anyway.  You didn’t really think he would build a wall, did you?

The issue that should scare everyone the most is climate change.  Once that damage is done, there is no undoing or repairing the it.  It is permanent.  We are the last generation that can do anything to stop climate change…and we just elected a climate denier.  Over the last 8 years, Obama and his administration has made unbelievable progress against climate change, even when obstructed by the republican heavy congress at every turn.  From halting the Keystone Pipeline, to the Paris Climate Agreement, we were on our way to beginning the arduous task of tackling this challenge.

With thousands of peer reviewed climate studies done, there is a world-wide consensus that this issue is the biggest problem the planet faces, and it is absolutely man-made.  No opinions.  No objections.  This is fact now.  The data says so.  NASA says so.  NOAA says so.  The smartest minds on planet earth agree.  You Facebook memes and Fox News commentators are wrong.  If you think it might be a hoax, or the science isn’t settled…we can assure you that you are misinformed.  Read a little.  Go to NASA.com.  Use credible sources not connected to Koch industries or other fossil fuel companies.  The science is settled. The answers are there.

Now we just elected a climate denier as president, who is surrounding himself with climate deniers in his cabinet.  Now what?  All progress is in jeopardy of being lost, and Obama’s environmental legacy may be destroyed.

Trump has a plan that will harm literally all living organisms on the planet.  No, thats not and exaggeration.  It’s not hyperbole.  here is a small excerpt from his plan for is first 100 days in office:

* FIFTH, I will lift the restrictions on the production of $50 trillion dollars’ worth of job-producing American energy reserves, including shale, oil, natural gas and clean coal.

* SIXTH, lift the Obama-Clinton roadblocks and allow vital energy infrastructure projects, like the Keystone Pipeline, to move forward

* SEVENTH, cancel billions in payments to U.N. climate change programs and use the money to fix America’s water and environmental infrastructure

He also vowed to pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement to reduce carbon emissions.  Truly the most important step the planet has come together on to combat climate change…and he is looking to get out of it.

All of this should terrify you, regardless of your political affiliation.  This is not a partisan issue, it is a human issue.  We all need clean water to drink.  We all need clean air to breathe.  We all need healthy soil to grow our crops.  We need bees to pollinate our crops.  If these things go forward, it will literally put your health in danger.  When we talk about climate change in 2016, we no longer speak in the future tense.  This is happening now.  Right now.  Historic droughts in California, historic wild fires and floods, our pollinating bees dying off, ice caps melting….all happening right now.  If this goes unchecked, we will cross the point of no return.

Syncrude Aurora Oil Sands Mine, north of Fort McMurray, Canada.

This used to be a beautiful forest in Canada before the fossil fuel industry used it to extract oil from the tar-sands. Under a Trump presidency, this is called “progress”. Trump holds personal investments in many pipelines and fossil fuel projects.

A promise of jobs is not an appropriate exchange for scorching the earth.  There are no jobs on a dying planet.  Your bank account will not matter to you when you can’t find clean water to give your children.

Too much doom and gloom?  Unfortunately, that is the cards we were just dealt.  If you voted for Trump, you just voted against your own best interest.  You were conned.  The promises he made on the campaign trail for taxes and Obama Care are already being walked back.  He fooled you, and millions of others.  If you voted for Trump, please take a moment and look inward to reflect on this.  Our country celebrated celebrity culture and anti-intellectualsm to such a degree that rational thought, education, science, and common sense became “elitist”.  If Trump follows through on his proposed plans against environmental protection, future generations will never forgive us….nor should they.
